How often should you replace your guitar strings?

Most beginners and hobbyists should replace their strings about once every six to twelve months. Most professionals change their strings every one to three months. The trebles will generally outlast the bass strings by several months, but generally it would be best to replace all six strings at once.

Tuning tips:

Begin with the treble E string and work your way down towards the bass strings. Tune the high E string one step higher to an F. Then grab the string half way up the fret board and stretch the strings by pulling upwards a few times. Then re-tune the E string back up to an F.

Repeat this process with each new string you install, tuning each one of them one step higher. Before going onto the next string, re-tune each of the previously tuned strings back up to the one step higher pitch. Throughout the tuning process the strings will continue stretch significantly. When you are finished tuning the low E string, you can then tune the other strings to the standard pitch, and you are ready to go.

How often should you re-tune your strings?

Answer: every time you pick up your guitar for a playing session, especially for the first week or so after changing the strings. Even the highest quality classical guitar strings will continue to stretch indefinitely. Many concert artists re-tune their guitars before each piece during a concert, sometimes even in the middle of a piece. If you perform publicly, it would be best to avoid re-stringing your guitar within a week prior to your public performance.

How much should I expect to pay for a nice set of classical guitar strings?

Answer: about $7.00 for a cheap set. About $15.00 for and average quality set. About $18.00 to 27.00 for a premium quality set.
